I LOVE the concept so I sent to the website to have a look… all good I thought, but wait!…
Why does only 25% of the fee go to the Emergency Relief Fund?
So I went to the FAQ’s and read this:

“75% of money raised will go directly to producing Art Square 2013. 25% will go directly to artists in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut impacted by Hurricane Sandy through the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Emergency Relief Fund.”

Someone takes 75% of the take to produce this? Sorry but I find that rather shocking and not in a good way… What happened to the idea of donating you time for a good cause?

If the event is in a public outside space it should be free…? what authority should charge for an event like this if it weren’t anyway?

Am I wrong in my calculation?: 1 artist makes 100 sketches at $10 per sketch = $1000, multiply by 100 artists = $100.000,– and this is given in the advertising as the hoped for target for the relief fund, but that assumes that ALL the money raised goes to the good cause, but then in the fine print if only 25% of that is actually going to the Relief fund then $75.000 is going … where exactly???

You are absolutely correct about this -.but the original fundraiser as I understand it was for the Time Square Art Square. It is a popular event so they have decided to donate 25% of the funds raised to the NYFA Hurricane Relief fund. Perhaps I should have stated this more clearly. I probably would not have participated without the Hurricane Sandy aspect of it all. I am donating my time etc.. for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts and I believe this event will get a lot of publicity which will help make folks aware of where to donate their money to help. But you are absolutely correct about the distribution of funds raised!

I hope folks will donate wherever they feel most comfortable because there is still a great need for assistance.

Today only my wife, Dawn Henning, is sketching bird interpretations of any photo you commision from her through The Times Square Art Foundation’s annual Sketchathon. It’s for a good cause, art.

75% goes to the New York Foundation for the Arts and this year 25% of the proceeds will be donated to artists needing help recovering from the damage caused by Sandy.

Sketches are a minimum of $20 to have a digital copy of your bird sketch emailed back to you. But you can donate more if you want and for an additional $6 shipping fee you get the original bird sketch interpretation of your photo by Dawn.

Just remember to select Dawn’s name in the artist drop down list if you decide to make a pledge. You can order as many sketches of as many photos as you like. 😉

Dawn is sketching away right now for a good cause at Alley NYC in Times Square.

Dawn is at the Sketchathon from 9am to 11pm trying to meet her pledged goal of 100 sketches. Help Dawn make her goal we can get out of here before bedtime. 🙂

  4. Your sketches are lovely and what a great event for talented artists and the public alike!

Thanks for liking my artwork! I really enjoyed your sketches. We’re also big fans of pigeons and crows.

Your photography is quite lovely also.

Oh wow, I appreciate your stopping by! Pigeons and crows can be overlooked but they are really spectacular birds… I love birds in general but usually don’t feel inspired to paint the more colorful birds. Thanks so much for your kind words!
