This painting is my first attempt at recreating a painting I made within a dream I had about a week ago ~ the title is the title that I dreamt “Unsent Letters” I remember writing the title on the back of the painting. I dreamt this after some interesting conversations with my daughter who was working on a project for school involving writing words or carrying words on her person…
For me painting is a process that starts off with an idea and it changes and evolves through the act of drawing and painting, often becoming something completely new ~ if I allow myself to be open to it
This painting was tough because I felt compelled to bring it back to the original memory from my dream and this is my first attempt – it feels awkward to me and requires another try.

I remember having such a strong dream once, I grabbed a notebook and drew a portrait in the dark! It wasn’t true to the dream, but I just felt I had to respond. Maybe dreams will always seem a little awkward when we bring them into the daylight – because they’re not at home here.

Thank you Ophelia! I think you are right, dreams are meant to live in our heads. It is interesting to try to convey the feelings and images, both for the process and the final result. A different way of seeing.

That’s amazing that you could visualize what you saw in a dream. Within 5 minutes of waking up, I forget my dream. I think it looks great for your first attempt. I also like the one with the yellow background.

Thanks for this! I almost never remember my dreams but when I do it is something very, very special, sometimes recurring… I have only dreamt about making art twice in my life, the other time was after my father died, more than 20 years ago. In my dream then, I tried to sketch, paint and collage his face because I thought that I would forget it. I never really attempted to recreate the piece once awake.

Trying to recall dreams makes me feel like I can’t quite catch up to a thought. It’s the runaway paper teasing me, letting me almost catch up to it before it flies off again. I love the depth in this painting, the way I can see layer upon translucent layer–just like a dream.
Thank you for the inspiration to post a painting I bought from a wonderful artist in the Pacific Northwest. It’s the painting that serves as my muse. I’m going to juxtapose it with a sculpture my husband bought. The two share a living room but are at opposite ends of the muse spectrum. Stay tuned…

I don’t ever feel satisfied with my depiction of my dreams because of all of the layers, experiences and feelings attached to them. Maybe it is a bit like photographing places you visit, it is a split second in the life of a dream as with a photograph, you may not feel the sun on your shoulders or smell the sea…

I don’t see well enough to qualify as an art critic but if the bird is to look natural, he has to relax somehow. If he’s to be part of a frieze, he’s fine. I’m likely missing the point altogether, a talent I have… but I enjoyed it.

Not an intentional series. I just like birds the best, so when I’m sketching or just playing around with new techniques or products, a bird is inevitably what comes out. 🙂 You’re right about the endless inspiration!

I like this painting so much as well as the dream which inspired it. The colors are appropriate to a dream—not sharp and discordant. It has a mellow feeling to it.
