The subtlety of patterns in natural forms and the colors as they appear in the natural world interest me. That juxtaposed with my love of patterns and color in textiles and the material world is the basis for much of my visual exploration. I have always been interested in our relationship with nature.
I have been Influenced greatly by my years working as a printmaker. Paper is my favorite surface to paint, and often paint in layers working with the residue of pigment that gets trapped within the fibers.
My love of birds and their gift of flight is a recurring theme in much of my work often used used as a metaphor (although I rarely paint them in flight.) for life.
I am a Brooklyn artist who works in education, who never has enough time to create art and this blog is my attempt to be more productive by making a drawing, painting, collage etc… each day for 2011, no matter how small. I am participating in postaday2011 and this is my new picture diary. I welcome your comments…

Hi Dawn,
Thank you for popping over to my blog, I come back for a visit and a wee look around and after looking at your artworks I can say that I’m inspired! Wow!
(NOT that I can draw birds like you, sadly not by a long shot) But I used to draw a lot some 10 years ago (before we had kids) and want to get my sketching mojo back.
Question please: do you also draw other subjects too? (curious!) and do you draw the first sketches from life or from photos?
I like how you show me works in progress from beginning to end, it helps me to remember how sketches evolve and build themselves into their final versions.
I’ve subscribed to your blog so that I can keep admiring your beautiful birds 🙂

Thank you so much for your kind words. I really like your blog. If you want to get back into your art you should start by sketching what is around you, it is so lovely. I would love to sketch from life but I do my sketches from photos that I find or take myself. I really appreciate your comments. I am not always pleased with my decisions to continue working on a drawing but am happy I can review the process too. Yes, I often work on other subjects and abstract ideas. I will keep checking your blog too. All the best!

I really enjoyed looking at all your magpie sketches and thanks for sharing the progress. I started drawing a bit last year and enjoy it very much. I bought a book in Australia called Funky things to draw, probably more for kids but it gave me some confidence to start at least. I have posted some of it on my drawing blog http://cathycorner.wordpress.com/

Thanks for calling by on my blog. I really like your apprach to art, the focus on corvids and printmaking. Working from life, crows are hard to capture. I think perhaps it is their liveliness, strength of purpose and intelligence that is hard to depict. I find i go for easier subjects, water fowl and herons. You have done a good job with your pctures. I shall follow.

I’m interested in why you chose painting over printmaking because your paintings look like prints (maybe that is not the case in person). I’d appreciate your thoughts on the merits of either medium!

Hi Mary,
Thanks for this!
I actually love printmaking and haven’t really made a choice – I think it has been more about logistics and having enough time to put into printmaking. For Silkscreen, which I have the most experience with… much time is needed to print an edition. I love working on monoprints (screened) because they add a new perspective to my work(for me) and it is a great way to loosen up when my paintings and drawings become too tight or overworked. I think my years working in printmaking and etching studios has greatly influenced my painting and is largely responsible for my unending love of paper… I almost never paint on canvas. As for patterns… they follow me whereever I go.
Thanks so much for stopping by!

I love all the different iterations of birds. I recently gained a pretty intense interest in birds. I am an architecture student in Arkansas and as an abstract beginning to a project, we studied and drew birds. Each student chose a different bird. Mine was a red-tailed hawk. Your painting of texture and color remind me of what we were doing. The birds wings, at least some of them had extraordinary patterns, especially if you zoomed in on the feathers. Your patterns are a little different, but there is definitely a relationship. I also appreciate the sketching workflow. A lot can be discovered through a sketch. I also love your photos on your website. I envy your travels. I would love to see the Taj. Anyway, Just thought I would comment on your good and consistent work. Nice blogging! BTW, my bird drawings (analytical and surface pattern) are on my blog if you are interested.
